7 Days Rongai Itinerary
Day 1: Nale Moru Gate – Simba Camp (Highlight: Scenic Village & Lush Rainforest)
- Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Nale Moru Gate (1,996m/6,548ft) after a scenic drive from Moshi. Following registration, you’ll be transferred to a nearby village, offering a glimpse into the local culture. Then, begin your trek through a lush rainforest teeming with colorful birds and vibrant plant life. Keep an eye out for towering fig trees and cascading waterfalls as you ascend to Simba Camp (2,626m/8,615ft) for your overnight stay.
Day 2:Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp (Highlight: Diverse Landscapes & Savannah)
- Today’s trek offers a gradual ascent through diverse landscapes. Leaving the rainforest behind, you’ll enter a fascinating zone of montane forest and heath, characterized by unique flora adapted to the increasing altitude. Enjoy panoramic views as the landscape opens up into a vast savannah ecosystem. Ascend further to Second Cave Camp (3,679m/12,070ft) for your overnight stay in scenic caves nestled amidst giant heather formations.
Day 3: Second Cave Camp – Kikelewa Camp (Highlight: Semi-Desert & Acclimatization Hike)
- Today’s challenging hike tackles a steeper ascent through semi-desert terrain. Enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the clouds gathering below. This route offers excellent acclimatization opportunities, allowing your body to adjust to the thinning air. Reach Kikelewa Camp (3,840m/12,600ft) for a well-deserved rest and overnight stay.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Hut (Highlight: Volcanic Landscape & Barranco Wall View)
- Today’s trek features a moderate ascent through volcanic terrain, offering a glimpse of the dramatic Barranco Wall on the opposite side of the mountain. The landscape transforms into a surreal moonscape with minimal vegetation. Reach Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,337m/14,230ft), nestled beside a beautiful glacial tarn, for your overnight stay.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut – Kibo Hut (Highlight: Acclimatization Hike & Summit Preparation)
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, crucial for a successful summit push. Embark on a scenic hike to even higher elevations, allowing your body to further adjust to the decreasing oxygen levels. Take in breathtaking panoramic views before returning to Mawenzi Tarn Hut for a relaxing afternoon. Later in the day, you’ll be transferred to Kibo Hut (4,700m/15,417ft) on the Kibo Crater rim, marking your base camp for the summit push the following night
Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut (Highlight: Summit Day & Descent)
- An early start marks the beginning of your pre-dawn summit push, typically commencing around midnight. Headlamps will illuminate your path as you navigate challenging terrain in the darkness. The climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft), the highest point in Africa, is demanding but incredibly rewarding. Witness a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds before beginning your descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,205ft) for a well-deserved rest and overnight stay.
Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate (Highlight: Celebrate Your Triumph & Lush Descent)
- Today marks the final leg of your journey. Descend through diverse landscapes, retracing your steps towards Marangu Gate. Enjoy the refreshing change in temperature as you return to the lush rainforest. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, celebrate your incredible accomplishment with your fellow climbers and guides. Receive your summit certificate and reflect on the unforgettable memories of your Rongai route adventure
